Steady Rise in At-Work Use in US

US office workers are using the Internet more often, and for longer, according to Nielsen NetRatings.  About 42.3 million US workers now go online at the office, up from 34.4 million a year ago.  Almost 15 percent of all US adults now use the Net at work.

At-work users go online an average of 43 times per month, up from 39 last year, and visit an average of 35 sites, up from 28 last year.  The average amount of time spent online per at-work user per month also rose to 22 hours and 38 minutes. Corporate information sites grew most in popularity, up 49 percent from last year.  Traffic from work locations to finance sites was up 42 percent, and traffic to travel sites increased by 31 percent.

82% Increase In Time Spent Per User Per Month
Media Metrix (05/28/01)

Media Metrix Canada released today highlights from its April 2001 Total Canada at Home Web Use Report. Results show that while the number of Canadians online has grown 14% since May 2000, on average the time spent per user per month online has grown 82% over the same timeframe. In April 2001, online Canadians at home spent 932 minutes on the 'Net or 15.5 hours in the month compared to 8.5 hours a year ago.

Canada led the world in time spent per user per month in April. In fact, Canadians spent nearly an hour more online than the United States, the next closest country. Lisa Eaton - VP General Manager Canada at Jupiter Media Metrix says, "Canada has one of the highest online usage rates in the world. We are obviously increasingly comfortable with the web, finding engaging content and using digital media applications. Leveraging this online behaviour effectively will be one of the key components of successful online business strategies."

General Social Survey on Internet Use
The Stats Canada Daily (03/26/01)

13 million Canadians, or 53% of those aged 15 and over, used the Internet at home, at work or at some other location in the 12 months prior to the survey. This was three times the 1994 rate of 18%. Although 11.6 million people aged 15 and older were not using the Internet in 2000, about 27% of them expressed interest in doing so. An estimated 3.1 million people, about one-quarter of all Canadians who surf the Internet, have used it to buy goods and services. About 28% of men and 19% of women who used the Internet reported they had purchased something on-line during the 12 months prior to the survey.

Global Net Population to Hit 1 Billion by 2005

More than 1 billion people will have Internet access by 2005, according to a newly released report from eTForecasts. The report says 414 million people had Internet access at the end of 2000 and predicts that figure will almost triple to 1.17 billion by 2005. This growth will be driven by increasing penetration in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. About 730 million of those will be using wireless devices to go online. This figure may seem overly optimistic but eTForecasts comments that wireless access will be the primary, or the only, form of Internet access available in many developing countries. The US will have 214 million users in 2005 and 83 million, or 39 percent, of these will use wireless devices. In Europe, 68 percent of the predicted 246 million Internet users will have wireless access.

Internet Hosts Reach 100 Million Worldwide

Communications software and solutions provider Telcordia Technologies, Inc. today reported that the number of Internet hosts has reached 100 million and has grown by 45 percent in the past year. Internet hosts include network elements such as routers, Web servers, mail servers, workstations in universities and businesses, and ports in modem banks of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The number of hosts is considered one of the most accurate measures of the size of the Internet. The Telcordia™ Internet Sizer, a Web-based tool that measures and forecasts a variety of Internet statistics, produces Internet host counts. New Internet statistics under exploration at Telcordia point to the possibility of relationships among Internet growth, electronic commerce and economic changes.

Even with such a high expansion rate, Internet growth may rapidly accelerate. Wireless access to the Internet has the potential to create a new surge of Internet growth, and future applications, which may require IP addresses even for home appliances, may also spur dramatic increases in rates of growth.

The Telcordia™ Internet Sizer, known as NetSizer reports that there are more than 350 million Internet users worldwide, with an average of 3.4 users per host. With the high quality of service in the United States there are approximately 2.4 Internet users per host, whereas in some developing countries such as China and India, there are more than 100 Internet users per host.

Global Internet Audience Passes 400m Mark

The global online population has grown to over 400 million for the first time. According to newly released statistics from Nua Internet Surveys, 407.1 million people now have Internet access.

This is more than double the number who had access in September 1999, when 201.05 million people were online.

Number of Pages Online Tops 2.1 Billion

The total number of pages on the Internet has surpassed 2.1 billion, according to Cyveillance, and more than 7 million new pages are being added each day. In its new report, "Sizing the Internet", Cyveillance says the Internet's highest rate of growth is still to come and predicts there will be more than 4 billion pages on the Internet by early 2001. The report says that 84.7 percent of pages are US-based. The average web page is 10KB in size, contains 23 internal links and 5.6 external links, and 14.4 images. It is only 6 months since Inktomi announced there were more than 1 billion pages on the Internet.

Internet Becoming an Everyday Tool

Almost 2 in 3 Americans over the age of 12 have access to the Internet and half of those go online every day, according to ACNielsen. Regular users are likely to spend at least an hour online at a time. Nearly half of US Internet users have purchased a product or service online. Email is the most used Internet application, with 86 percent of Internet users regularly sending and receiving mails. Books continue to be the most popular item purchased as 42 percent of Internet users have bought them online. 38 percent have bought music products and 29 percent have purchased software.

One Billion Email Accounts by 2002
Messaging Online (04/11/00)


There were 569 million email accounts globally at year-end 1999, up 83 percent on the previous year, according a new report to Messaging Online. The report predicts there will be 1 billion email accounts in two years' time. In the early 1990s, there were 15 million email accounts in the world.

There are now about 333 million electronic mailboxes in the US. About two-thirds of the US workforce and about half of US households now use email. Accounting for overlap, at least 40 percent of those living in the US are email users. Growth in the rest of the world exceeded 100 percent last year, up from 117 million at year-end 1998. Globally, under 5 percent of workers and about 6 percent of households use email although penetration is closer to US levels in most of Europe and many parts of Asia/Pacific.
